• Meetings are held the 2nd Sunday of each month at the University of Findlay (Ohio).
• We meet in the ENDLY ROOM in the Student Union Building which is on the corner of Frazer and Cory (map and directions below).
• The meeting starts at 7pm, but we get together a little earlier to visit.
• After the business portion of the meeting, the real FUN begins! We have our "SHOW-N-TELL" session, with everyone bringing their latest finds, or items they have questions about.
• Membership is open to all. 
• Check us out first. Non-members can visit our meetings anytime.

• Campus runs along the west side of Main St.
• Turn west on FRAZER St (you'll see the Theology building on the corner of Frazer and Main).
• Turn into the parking lot on the north side of the street. That is the lot for the library and the Student Union building. 
• Enter the STUDENT UNION building door that is nearest the gazebo. 
• Our meeting room, the ENDLY ROOM is just inside that door, to your right. See the red X on the map photo above.

Teakettle inkwells can be found in many beautiful colors and shapes, as well as clear, ceramic and pottery. Embossed glass ones are rare. Some of the pottery will have an advertising name on them. Occasionally one can be found with the English ink company name on a brass medallion fitted to the top of the bottle. The embossed American one we see most often is the aqua one with pen ledges and a patent date. Also pictured in this group is an aqua Butler’s ink which is considered hard to find. The barrel inks are thought to be American, whereas the others are of unknown maker for the most part. The figural ones such as snail, turtle, etc. are thought to be European. The problem with identifying the maker or ink company is that without embossing of any kind, the only way to know would be pictures from a glassmaker’s catalog or an old ad. I haven’t seen any pictured in a catalog. The only old picture I have seen is a ladies fashion plate picture dated 1839 in William Covill’s ink book.http://home.comcast.net/~edandlucy1/Featured_inks.html

Dick Cole, President of the Muncie Fruit Jar Club [fruitjar.org] writes to tell us of the great new

Fruit Far Display at the Minnetrista Museum in Muncie

"Minnetrista has moved the Gift Ship from the Lobby of the main building.  They combined it with the Orchard Shop.

The resulting empty space was filled with fruit jars.  What better choice?  

Since it is on the first floor, it is open to the public and free. 

How long will the display be there? Probably until next May.  

Those of you who can’t make the monthly meetings can see it when you come to Muncie for the Annual Show in January."

Urbana Bottle Show Cancelled

August 2013 Urbana Ohio bottle show has been cancelled. Show chairman John Bartley sent this note: 

Subject: CANCELED- URBANA BOTTLE SHOW, AUGUST 17, 2013

The Champaign County Fair Board has CANCELED the Urbana Antique Bottle and Advertising Show that was scheduled for August 17th. The building has been mistakenly contracted out for another event and we were only told recently of this conflict. No one is more disappointed than I.

Please inform any local collectors and your local bottle club of this cancellation. If you have it posted on your website or event calendar, please make those changes. If you have flyers, please recycle.

All contracts will be returned with full refund. Don’t forget to cancel any hotel/motel reservations you may have made.

There will NOT be a 2013 Summer Muncie Fruit Jar Get Together (link)

From the ''Things that make you go hmmm... file'':

The automated glass bottle making machine is said to have done more for education than child labor laws:

IN 1913, MIchael J. Owens, a principal figure in the American  glass industry, received an unsolicited letter from a “special agent” of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The contents were startling.  

The NCLC had, since its founding nearly ten years earlier, devoted itself almost exclusively to ending industrial child labor in America and had achieved remarkable success in that arena. Further, the NCLC had focused special attention on the nation’s glass-bottle industry, which, with its longstanding practice of employing thousands of children—the so-called glass house boys—had one of the most egregious records of child employment in the country.  

Yet, notwithstanding these efforts, this letter thanked Owens for accomplishing what the NCLC admitted it had been unable to do: virtually ending the use of child labor in the nation’s glassbottle factories, especially the practice of night labor, for which the glass houses were infamous and which the committee considered particularly odious. 

The letter Owens received is especially remarkable because he was no progressive reformer. He was the son of a West Virginia coal miner and was himself a former union glass worker who had become one of the leading industrial glass men in the country. 

What Owens did to generate the letter and earn the praise and respect of the NCLC was to invent, patent, and market the world’s first fully automated glass-bottle blowing machine, what came to be known as the “Owens Automatic.”  

Until that time, because of the intricacies of the production process, glass bottles were almost universally made by hand. The Owens Automatic marked the end of a method of glass production that had held sway for thousands of years and had shaped nearly every aspect of the American glass bottle industry. [Read more.]

I don't know who's responsible for putting the 2013 show program together, but they did a super job. Kudos to Show Chairpersons Michael George and Maureen Crawford! I'm sure they'd say ''it takes a village''.

I really like the addition of the 2013 seminar speaker's profiles, and the article about local Manchester tourist activities. It's great that they actually included live links. Technology is wonderful.

Notes:Exhibitor: Pacific Glass Company. Exhibit notes: ... a series of terraces rising to a height of fourteen feet, filled with a great variety of wine, soda, sauce and mustard bottles, pickle and fruit jars, prescription phials, lamp chimneys, etc., crowned with a huge Acid Carboy, gave assurance that the days of dependence upon uncertain imported stocks, and the gleanings of the chiffonier have passed away.

Todd Knisely shared his observation about these ancient bottles:

There is almost nothing “new” in glassworking. Almost every idea and thing we see has been done before, sometimes long before. Here is a 9^th century perfume or scent bottle, that is a 12-rib broken-swirl pattern. I think this bottle is exceptional and wanted to pass it along.

The funny thing is, if it would have been blown in America about 850 years later, it would probably be worth quite a bit more money. . .

Sad news: J. Carl Sturm has passed. The club sends its condolences to Carl's family and friends. A great loss to them, and to our hobby. Carl was a past FOHBC President, and is in the FOHBC Hall of Fame.

It's Baaackkk! Today is Friday the 13th!

Fruit jars with the number 13 on the base are sought after.

Last year, 2012, we had three Friday the 13ths! This year, just two of the superstition-laden days will cross our paths.

Several theories have been proposed about the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition.

One theory states that it is a modern amalgamation of two older superstitions: that thirteenis an unlucky number and that Friday is an unlucky day.

• In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve hours of the clock, twelve gods of Olympus, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, the 12 successors of Muhammad in Shia Islam, twelve signs of the Zodiac, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.
• Friday has been considered an unlucky day at least since the 14th century's The Canterbury Tales,^[5] and many other professions have regarded Friday as an unlucky day to undertake journeys or begin new projects.
• One author, noting that references are all but nonexistent before 1907 but frequently seen thereafter, has argued that its popularity derives from the publication that year ofThomas W. Lawson's popular novel Friday, the Thirteenth,^[6] in which an unscrupulousbroker takes advantage of the superstition to create a Wall Street panic on a Friday the 13th.^[1]

Here are some "Friday the 13th" info-tidbits from Wikipedia:

• The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia [say that 10 times fast -- yikes!]
• The 13th day of the month is slightly more likely to be a Friday than any other day of the week.
• On average, there is a Friday the 13th once every 212 days. 
• It's estimated that 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day -- & estimated that $800 million is lost in business on this day.

• Many older bottle openers have a small square hole called a "Prest-O-Lite Key". It was used to turn the valve on automobile gas headlights from about 1910 through the early 1930's before electric headlights were widely used.

Why Join an Antique Bottle Collecting Club? 

That's a good question, one posed recently by the Association of Collecting Clubs (A.C.C. website: Collectors.org), the group that works to promote all kinds of hobby and collecting clubs.

The Findlay Club is listed with them here.

Here's their list of 6,257 clubs -- yes, six thousand two hundred sixty seven collector clubs!

It is FREE to have your club listed, so head over there now and fill out the online form.

Then you will start getting their e-newsletters too, with updates about all kind of things that affect the collecting hobby, and impacts on clubs on shows.

We still haven't covered why you should join a collecting club. I could paraphrase, but the A.C.C. has summed it up quite well:

The Role of Collecting Clubs

Collecting groups are an important segment of our antiques, art and collectibles community. All of these clubs have one basic thing in common - they exist to help collectors. For many collecting areas, these clubs - and their members - represent the backbone of the knowledge base for the collecting area that group supports. They also provide connections to other collectors, and opportunities to develop friendships that can last a life time. Clubs are a great resource for expanding a collector's knowledge about a collecting area, for finding new materials and for determining current values; even for selling your collectibles. Most clubs encourage networking by offering annual conventions, sponsoring shows and social gatherings which bring club members together. Smaller geographic clubs often have monthly meetings. Combined, our collecting clubs have 10's of thousands of events every year! In addition to the meetings and other events, many clubs issue member newsletters and journals and have a website and discussion forums. A parallel mission to educating their membership for many clubs is that of researching, studying and documenting the various artifacts relating to the collecting area a particular club supports. Some clubs publish reference books and price guides and establish archives, educational exhibits and museums. Seminars, workshops and conferences are often a part of the club convention or show, and those having monthly meetings often have a speaker discussing a topic related to their collecting area. Most clubs offer a pleasing balance between education, social and business. They often are the segment of the antiques, art and collectibles industry that keep collectors collecting. Looking at the role of clubs more broadly, not only do collecting clubs support their memberships, but indirectly they strengthen the industry for the greater benefit of other segments - the auction houses and galleries, antique shops and malls, antique and collectible shows, collector publications, appraisers, restoration specialists and all other parts of this wonderful antiques and collectibles family.
